Evergreen posted in the group College – Lack of Diversity / Racism
Even though black or African American students make up about a fifth of the VCU community (more than any other racial group, barring whites), I wish there were more of a presence of black students not only in the school, but in my field. I recently graduated with Honors and a biology minor. The Honors College especially needs to increase efforts to get black students (or other minority students) to apply because there are hundreds that meet the requirements each year and simply don’t apply.

I definitely agree with this. Might sound corny asab, but I think we’ve got to better show the fun of learning. That way, black kids can become more interested in those other fields. And I don’t even mean post-grad ones like the medical field, but also trade school opportunities. Trade school professions pay well, are necessary, and can even provide opportunities for entrepreneurship. I’m not saying we don’t already show the value and fun of learning in black communities now, but we can definitely do better

I feel like we also need to push black kids to enter different fields. For years we’ve only told our kids they can be certain things and not others, let’s open it up and allow our kids to be what they want.
