I feel as though due to culture, stigmas, and various other factors, men as a whole often suppress emotions. This can sometimes lead to mental illness that goes unaddressed which can be detrimental to the overall well being of an individual. With that being said I think it is important for these factors to be deconstructed and dismantled.

Mental Health has always been a subject that black men tend to skip over as a whole, and these habits in which we are taught to suppress our emotions are often passed down to future generations.

How do you think we beat the habits of suppressing emotions and what can we do not to repeat the same mistakes?

What helps me prevent myself from suppressing my emotions is to describe them. I’ve found that talking about them allows me to think out loud and process them. There are times when I don’t even have to be speaking to someone; just hearing myself acknowledge the emotions and events/memories that triggered them goes a long way.
