A time when I noticed that there was a lack of diversity at VCU was during my freshman year when I was attending lecture for my General Chemistry class. The lecture took place in Grace hall (the auditorium that sits over 200 people) and at least 99% of the seats were taken every lecture. I always sat towards the back of the auditorium and had a good view of everyone in the class. During the first few lectures I noticed that there was only a hand-full of black men (probably less than that) in the entire class. This made me feel isolated but it was also empowering and made me feel extremely grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to receive a collage education.
