I feel that as black men, societal expectations are too low and so it’s as if we are expected to fail. Some choose to be resilient and circumvent those obstacles while others are content with having that excuse. As men we need to uplift not only each other but the bar in a healthy way to establish a sense of identity outside of the one ascribed to us

I agree with you on the expectation standpoint. I’d like to believe that some of the disparities in education and income will lessen within the next generation. I think a large part of these expectations are due to representation in media like TV shows. For instance, I can only think of Steve Urkel as a character within black television who was intelligent and aspired to achieve. I think that stigmas around attainment will change on a micro-scale as more people of color are encouraged to pursue degrees from an early age
