Slatt716 posted in the group JMU – Diversity
I understand that JMU is a PWI but I think it not only suffers in the diversity of race but diversity in mentality. I feel like it has created a rift between the school population which was especially evident during the pandemic. I think the school can do a better job in creating spaces for everybody. I found that plenty of my friends left their freshman year because they couldn’t find a place that they belonged to. I found that this school can tend to be very clique-ish and people who aren’t in these select groups tend to be viewed as others. When it comes to issues like racism it has been an issue at James Madison, when the BLM protests were happening the Black lives matter spirit rock that was made was defaced twice and they just ended up painting the spirit rock black. Although JMU made a statement reprimanding whoever did it there was no real effort to find who did it. I think this made the black community in the school feel alienated. I think this school can do more to provide inclusivity and diversity.
