I agree that mental health needs to be taken more seriously by African communities, but I think that the problem is that we have gone through a lot and we have simply chosen to stay silent to avoid remembering some of the pain we have experienced in the past. Whether it is people in the diaspora or in the continent, I feel like a lot of us have experienced trauma and as a result we are afraid to even talk about it. I think that’s one of the reasons why we just decide to put a brave face on and simply ignore our mental health problems

Yes! I totally agree 🙂 I feel like a lot of us have been through so much to the point that we have gotten used to certain things that are actually worsening our mental health. And since those things have become normal we remain silent when we should not. I can only hope that the generation after us is not as affected by this issue. Personally, I plan on attending some therapy sessions before I become a parent so that I do not raise my kids in a way that will negatively affect their mental health later on.
