Mental health just needs to be taken more seriously in African communities as a whole. A lot of times people just credit depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses to demonic or spiritual events and while that may be a factor (for those who believe in it), there are physiological and psychological bases for these illnesses. We should seek the proper help via therapy and medication if needed to deal with these things in a healthy manner. There is such a negative stigma against getting help, and some africans like to act like it’s not a real thing. It exists, and we should all try our best to spread awareness and change the connotation around it. We need to promote an environment where people feel comfortable opening up about their mental challenges in a way where they aren’t judged. Discussions like these really help!!
