Growing up in a Dominican household has taught me a lot about being a black woman. In today’s society, the Black community has dealt with and is still dealing with a lot. From slavery, segregation, to systemic racism, colorism, and modern-day BLM movements. I think it’s important to recognize how deep-rooted racism really is. Hearing the words “negritos” when my family referred to darker-skinned people showed me that racism is truly about something as superficial as the color of someone’s skin. Hearing my grandad refer to me as “his little dark skin” growing up proved this point even more. Hearing my grandma call my mom out for being her only daughter to marry and black man and ring home black kids. Taught me that some people of color live in a delusion about their own race, especially Afro-Latinos. Speaking Spanish does not change our ethnicity, at the end of the day we can have our own cultural differences yet must still remember we’re a part of the fight. The fight against racism, because when it comes down to it if a racist cop pulls me over he’s not going to act differently because I’m Dominican. Whether Afro Latino, African, afro -European, African American, etc. Where all still a part of the fight because we’re for ourselves and our people.
